Field notes / Engineering

Ownership is an architecture decision.

A handover works when independence is built into the engagement from the start.

Make the system legible.

Your team should be able to understand the system without relying on a single person. Keep architecture decisions, operating instructions, and trade-offs alongside the work. Documentation should explain why the system is the way it is.

Build a repeatable release path.

A reliable deployment process, tested recovery steps, and explicit access management make a system easier to own. Rehearse the important operations with the people who will run it.

Transfer judgment, too.

The final deliverable includes the context behind the code. Pairing, reviews, and shared incident exercises help transfer that context. In Build–Operate–Transfer, this learning should happen throughout the operating phase.
